Garba 2010 goes sustainable!

SAC says “This time, during the event, we’re planning to have a stall dedicated to the NID community. The students, faculty, etc, can make exclusive Garba merchandise and put it up for sale at this stall. Exclusive meaning that no two products in the stall will be the same! By merchandise, it could mean anything from illustrations to posters to postcards to junk jewellery to pen-stands to bookmarks to audiovisual content and anything else you can come up with! Of course, the theme of the product should be “Garba”!

-Please make these products out of cheap material, thrown away material and do recycle waste, because the cost of production will NOT be compensated by the institute or the SAC.

-Prices will be decided by the Garba 2010 team. One can always suggest the price he/she would like the product to cost.

-Students/faculty making the product will NOT get any monetary profit in case of it’s sale. Their names cannot be associated with the products officially as it is against the institute’s rules for any student to sell a commodity under his/her personal name while being a student of NID.

Whatever money that we earn from sale of items will go in the SAC account for future expenses. So, if one is concerned about the money, it will come back indirectly for students’ benefit.

Anyways, the reason why we have taken this initiative is not to make any profit. This year one of the SAC’s aim is to connect the city of Ahmedabad the NID student body. Apart from social service initiatives which will be taken by the SAC this year, Garba is a platform where we can share our work, thoughts and solutions with people from outside the NID community. This is the larger context to this initiative and we are hoping for a real positive response from specially the student body.

Think about it, everyone gets to go home with an exclusive item as a souvenir of being a part of a rare “NID experience”!

Lalu’s film ‘Ehsaas’ – web premiere!

The National Institute of Design’s (NID’s) auditorium was brimming over on 18th August with students curious to watch their resident chaiwala’s directorial debut — a five-minute film Ehsaas — directed, shot and edited entirely by him.

Lalu, who is so called because of the red t-shirt he usually wears, has even composed the film’s music.

His relatives have been selling tea outside the NID main gate for years now. As Lalu grew up around the institute, he knows many of the design school’s past and present students, and teachers.

Final-year UG Film Design student Rudro Bhandary came up with the idea of shooting a documentary on how someone who has never been technically trained, but has seen a lot of film-making and films (courtesy NID), would go about making a film all on his own.

With a modest budget of Rs 1,000 and the institute’s camera on free loan, Lalu began his project.

The film is technically sound and begins with a tilted frame. The plot revolves around a lazy youth who is compelled to take up work to overcome his family’s poverty. The protagonist’s wandering ways are depicted through loud music and unsteady shots, which steady out when he finally makes up his mind to accept a job offered by a stranger.

NID rocks Jewellery fashion week!

Five students from National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar, presented a unique and futuristic jewellery collection at India’s first jewellery fashion week held in Mumbai recently.

Swati Agarwal, Chetan Sharma, Avantika Kumar, Sanjeev Gupta and Gauri Pandey trumped 120 entries from various design institutes in the country to turn NID into the only institute that showcased its talent in ‘India International Jewellery Week (IIJW)’.

The designs dazzled the audience along with creations by 30 renowned Indian jewellery designers including Farah Khan Ali, Varun D Jani, Bina Goenka and Rhea Nasta. The funky collection called New Adorn contained 14 pieces including neck pieces, waist chains, rings and earrings.

Head of NID’s Lifestyle and Accessory Design department Shimul Mehta Vyas said, “The jewellery week was a successful attempt at promoting jewellery design in India. The international market looks on us as artisans, not as designers. This event will help change the image.”

Lalu directs film?

We received a tantalizingly cryptic mail from Arka Gupta today morning. I reproduce it verbatim as below.

Title: “Ehsaas”
Director: Lalu.
6:15 PM. AUDI.
Yes, that IS the Lalu we know…

Now that’s got my goat. I have to see what Lalu has done and hopefully I shall have this up on my blog for everyone soon.
