Harikrishnan reinterprets the tanpura!

Product Design student Harikrishnan has redesigned the classical music instrument – the tanpura. When Hari began his research he realized that the tanpura was dying a slow death with the advent of electronic shruti boxes. On one hand wherein en entire generation of music students embraced the electronic shruti box for its convenience of size and cost, the purists insisted that it could never be replaced.

Hari used his study of intangibles and perceptions to redesign an electronic version for the current breed of young music students who were comfortable with electronic interfaces and aesthetics. His design addressed issues of compactness, interface, tactile response, ergonomics and most important – the purity of relationship between the musician and the instrument.
